Jean Paul Gaultier 2012 Couture Inspired by the Late Amy Winehouse

539 Jean Paul Gaultier '12 CoutureJean Paul Gaultier made a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse in his latest haute couture collection shown this week in Paris. Garments, in Gaultier’s signature style, were worn by model’s sporting beehive hairstyles, flicked up black eyeliner and doll-like wedges. The spring/summer ’12 show included looks entitled “Brit Award”, “Victoria’s Secret In My Bag” and “Love Is a Losing Game”. Winehouse’s father Mitch, however, has spoken out against the fashion collection, stating that it is in bad taste and that the family were not made aware of the tribute prior to the show.

The clothes included wonderful corsetry and beautiful long trench coats, all in rich colours - pink, gold and chartreuse. Think Gaultier’s signature trashy luxe (but with a couture price tag). Long sequinned jackets were teamed with tiny girdle shorts and even suiting featured corsetry detailing. Another back-to-front polo shirt dress appeared in ivory sequins, another lace evening gown in fluorescent orange was fit for a true diva. Vogue called the show a ‘wonderful and loving tribute’ to Winehouse, but as all the girls appeared for the finale in lace mourning mantilla veils, was it too much?

Mitch Winehouse said, “The family was upset to see those pictures, they were a total shock. We're still grieving for her loss, and we've had a difficult week with the six-month anniversary of Amy's death. To see her image lifted wholesale to sell clothes was a wrench we were not expecting or consulted on. We're proud of her influence on fashion but find black veils on models, smoking cigarettes with a barbershop quartet singing her music in bad taste. It portrays a view of Amy when she was not at her best, and glamorises some of the more upsetting times in her life. That's upsetting for her family”.

Jean Paul Gaultier Launches Swimwear for La Perla

172 Gaultier La Perla lingerie

Jean Paul Gaultier first teamed up with La Perla last year to design an exclusive range of lingerie.  Now, the fashion designer has announced that a swimwear line in his name will be paddling its way into stores come January.

The swimwear line retains Gaultier’s signature bondage look, strong fashion for strong women. The range includes bikinis, one-pieces (that aren’t actually in one piece) and beach cover-ups in bright orange, khaki, black and sky blue. There is a backless cover-up dress, a pink ruffle bikini, red bandeau bikini, black swimsuit with bondage style side panels and a sky blue bandeau cut away swimsuit. A navy one piece with cinched in waist and loose, cowl neck top provides a modern alternative to the traditional swimsuit and would work well with a cover-up from beach to bar. Body con mini-skirts with lattice tie detailing complete the collection.

Prices start at £225 and will be available from Jean Paul Gaultier and La Perla stores from January, perfect for all those people going on a winter break to the Caribbean.  If however, the prices are a bit steep, or you can’t wait until next year, why not take inspiration from the collection to plan this summer’s beach look.  We have seen a huge increase in popularity of the one-piece, thanks to high fashion designers like Missoni, Mui Mui and 3.1 Phillip Lim embracing a more covered up look. You can go for a sporty bondage style, stand out print, or borrow a look from lingerie trends.

Paris Haute Couture Shows: Drama from Dior, Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier

Despite only a handful of people being able to afford haute couture, the rest of us can at least derive some pleasure from admiring it.  Paris Haute Couture A/W 2011 did not disappoint and provided plenty of moments of pure lust*sigh*.  The couture shows loosely fall into two camps, the OTT but curiously beautiful collections that could easily pass for a piece of theatre, and the more wearable collections for the super rich to build their wardrobes.  The theatrical shows allow the designers to sketch without limits; they can create whatever their imagination can conjure up and sit back and watch as the fashion press goes crazy.  One of those shows this year (and every year for that matter) was Christian Dior.

It was the first Christian Dior couture show not overseen by John Galliano, with his successor Bill Gaytten taking a bow at the finale. Fashion commentators expressed disappointment with the collection, but if it were perfect poor Gaytten would have nowhere to go but down.  The collection regained control of Dior’s signature look of bustier dresses and full skirts, with a doll-like theme. Unusually for a winter collection, pastel colours dominated a third of the show and there was a striking lack of fur.
