How to Wear it: Leopard Print Jeans

I am currently a bit, well a lot, obsessed with leopard print jeans. No one is more surprised than me, when did leopard print jeans become cool rather than trashy? Well trashy cool at least. The trend seems to be down to denim brand Current/Elliott and the rise of last year’s ‘cocktail jean’. The cocktail jean is a fancy take on the standard skinny, in fact ‘cocktail’ is the new prefix in fashion to describe anything a bit fancier than average – the cocktail earring for example.

Animal print jeans crept into style last year, as seen on the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and Isla Fisher. I liked them back them, but I wouldn’t have gone out wearing them. Now however, I want to wear them! Last summer the leopard print jeans by Current/Elliott sold out at my-wardrobe.com in 24 hours despite the £210 price tag and this year they have restocked on the trend.

LA based Current/Elliott was founded in 2008 by Serge Azria with the aim of producing a collection entirely crafted from denim. The brand is born out of a love of vintage denim and American roots and has quickly garnered a cult following in the fashion world. This season at net-a-porter you can get the low rise leopard print skinny jean in four colour ways – petal pink, mint, camel or grey. The print is quite subdued and therefore easy to wear. Petal pink and mint are fully on trend for this spring’s icy pastel colour palette but I’m quite a big fan of the grey.

Hand Customised PRPS Jeans Auctioned for Japanese Tsunami Victims for Upwards of £1000

A few weeks ago I blogged about the new ‘cocktail’ jean, i.e. luxury, bold pieces that turned the humble jean into something of a fashion statement of wealth and exclusivity. A £214 pair of CURRENT/ELLIOTT leopard print look, super skinny fit jeans had already been spotted on Sarah Jessica-Parker and Kate Moss, selling out on my-wardrobe within 24 hours and prompting the cocktail jean frenzy.

Exclusive upmarket denim brands are now two-a-penny and the latest jeans can be found at cult American label PRPS. Their jeans cost over £200 a piece and are hand-distressed by Japanese craftsmen. The company has teamed up with Matches fashion chain to auction off pairs of its new Noir jeans customised by the artists Gavin Turk, Mark Titchner, and Tim Noble and Sue Webster; all proceeds go to support Unicef's work with children affected by the tsunami in Japan.

Mark Titchner has designed a pair of striking foil jeans, literally gilded in silver foil. Online bids are being taken above £1000 up to 18th September 2011 at prpsnoirbids@iprlondon.com. Now that might seem a lot for a pair of jeans, but how about if you consider them a piece of art? Is fashion art? Now that’s something to muse over.

PRPS is already a fave brand of Kate Moss, Jude Law, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Gerard Butler. Using African cotton and skilled Japanese manufacturing, every detail of the denim is thought through. Indeed their denim and casual wear range is the perfect celebrity off-duty look. For autumn, the women’s collection includes cable knit sweaters, checked ponchos, faux fur trimmed parkas, oversized tees and cargo styles. Denim is not just confined to jeans, with denim shirts, a denim jumpsuit and denim jackets also forming a part of the collection.

Cocktail Jeans: The New Term for Fancy Jeans, Skinny and Bold

Does the versatility of jeans know no bounds? For summer we had the bright jean, red specifically if you were really keen to jump on the trend. Now, the world of denim has gone a step further to the cocktail jean, skinny and sexy, in leopard print or shimmering hues, the cocktail jean is the latest way to wear denim.

‘Cocktail’ is starting to become a bit of an ‘it’ word in fashion. Not to be taken literally, cocktail is there to describe something super stylish. The cocktail ring, the cocktail skirt, and now, the cocktail jean. The special style catching everyone’s eye is by CURRENT/ELLIOTT. Costing £214 they have a muted leopard print look and super skinny fit.  Already spotted on Sarah Jessica-Parker and Kate Moss, the style sold out on my-wardrobe within 24 hours of being launched.

This new season jean can be worn in the day with a t-shirt (now) or chunky knit (when winter has taken hold). It can be dressed up for night with heels and a simple black top and works whether you prefer a grungy or glam aesthetic. Levi’s Made & Crafted waxed black jeans (£125) have a leather look, but by being waxed denim they are automatically far cooler and are able to join the cocktail jean club. Unlike more adventurous designs, these are likely to stay around for more than one season.
