Fashion How to: Wear Summer Tweed

851 Sister Jane Tweed Jacket

You might not associate tweed with summer dressing, but a) it works and b) summer dressing has pretty much been thrown out the window anyway. Celebs and models have been stepping out in the trend with pastel tweeds in short cuts really hitting the spot. Find the classic look at Chanel and Lanvin, or shop the high street for affordable alternatives.

Tweed conjures up imagines of country style and warm winter coats. There is something very English about tweed. Worn badly it can be aging and fuddy-duddy, but worn well tweed is a classic and can make you looked smarter, cooler, more sophisticated. Chanel has kept the tweed jacket look alive for decades, after rolling out the first style in 1936. Made in the Duke of Westminster’s factory and lined in fur, a classic cover-up was born. Chanel SS12 mixed crisp white with beautiful pastel shades and plenty of texture. The classic tweed suit was re-imagined for summer with a pearlised finish - full skirts and jackets cut shoulder-blade high at the back to show off pearl-studded spines.

A classic Chanel tweed jacket will set you back a couple of grand, much like Lanvin’s take on the look with this glass pearl embellished boucle tweed jacket. Add the matching pencil skirt and top-to-toe elegance will set you back more than £3000. You can get a more affordable and perhaps more wearable tweed jacket from Paul & Joe Sister. This blue perceval style for £96 (half price) is now on my-wardobe.com.

Paris Haute Couture Shows: Drama from Dior, Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier

Despite only a handful of people being able to afford haute couture, the rest of us can at least derive some pleasure from admiring it.  Paris Haute Couture A/W 2011 did not disappoint and provided plenty of moments of pure lust*sigh*.  The couture shows loosely fall into two camps, the OTT but curiously beautiful collections that could easily pass for a piece of theatre, and the more wearable collections for the super rich to build their wardrobes.  The theatrical shows allow the designers to sketch without limits; they can create whatever their imagination can conjure up and sit back and watch as the fashion press goes crazy.  One of those shows this year (and every year for that matter) was Christian Dior.

163 Dior Couture 2011

It was the first Christian Dior couture show not overseen by John Galliano, with his successor Bill Gaytten taking a bow at the finale. Fashion commentators expressed disappointment with the collection, but if it were perfect poor Gaytten would have nowhere to go but down.  The collection regained control of Dior’s signature look of bustier dresses and full skirts, with a doll-like theme. Unusually for a winter collection, pastel colours dominated a third of the show and there was a striking lack of fur.

Claudia Schiffer Geek Chic for Chanel

unfussy, elegant pieces of eyewear. The model is Claudia Schiffer.  The flower is a Camellia, the favourite flower of Coco Chanel herself. Indeed could the image be anymore Chanel?

In the latest A/W ad campaign to be revealed by a luxury brand, Claudia Schiffer is seen modelling four styles from Chanel’s new eyewear range. The range includes prescription lenses and sunglasses.  The new style features chain detailing on the side of the frames, reminiscent of Chanel signature quilted chain bags.

Schiffer’s relationship with Chanel goes back to the 80s and she is a friend of creative director Karl Lagerfeld, a fellow German. Most recently Schiffer starred in the label’s s/s 2007 campaign where she was pictured writhing on a sandy beach in some of Chanel’s finest. Schiffer has done catwalk modelling for Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, Valentino and Ralph Lauren, and has been the face of Mango and Accessorize.   The 40 year-old is married to successful film director Matthew Vaughn to whom she has three children.
