As the headline says, florals aren’t just for summer. This winter flower power has fought through the cold weather and is here to stay. The way to wear it is bold, think tropical prints and sixties carpets rather than ditzy patterns. The inspiration comes from Erdem’s painterly prints, Jonathan Saunders’ tropics and Jil Sander’s winter blooms.
Erdem’s prints for A/W ’11 were more abstracted than previous seasons. His Monet style prints are perfect for the grown up woman, be inspired by the rich use of colour and all over texture. At Jonathan Saunders, startling turquoise tropical bird prints were featured on warm orange dresses, whilst green and blue were juxtaposed against black. Jil Sander’s winter blooms include a romantic textured rose print and bold florals against a navy background on cocoon shapes and even a jumpsuit.
As high street stores make way for pre-spring collections, bold florals will be in plentiful supply. Warehouse is worth a trip into town for. They have sweet daisy prints and daring floral brights with a vintage touch. The Daisy V-front dress, £45, is perfect for the day to night look. Smart enough for work but sexy enough for play, the dress has a v-necked front and back for a flirty touch. The pretty pink print on black is a sure winter bloom hit. The Ornamental print skirt is also a fabulous buy. At £45, it could easily be mistaken for a designer alternative and the bold print is a welcome change from the classic black pencil skirt. Keep it chic with a simple black sweater and opaque tights.
New Look, H&M and ASOS also have bold winter florals in stock. If you go for this print, keep the rest of the outfit simple. You can’t go wrong with black, but if you’re feeling playful why not add a neon clutch bag or jewellery.
